Heavy rain event likely for central and eastern PEI for Sunday/Monday

Sunday 8:55am  A NE-SW cold frontal trough located through western NB early this morning will move east to lie across central PEI by this evening. The front is then expected to stall across eastern PEI  on Monday. Moisture will train northward along this stalled/slow moving front giving significant amount s of rainfall especially eastern areas. Environment Canada has already issued heavy rainfall warnings for parts of PEI and NS. Thunderstorms are expected to develop today giving enhanced rainfall. The front will be slow to move away thus showers expected through early Tuesday. High pressure should then build in for Wednesday and Thursday followed by a week cold front on Friday. High pressure returns for the weekend.

Precipitation.. Showers have already begun up west and should develop down east by noon. Showers will become periods of rain at times heavy today and continue through Monday afternoon.Heaviest amounts are expected across central and eastern PEI where 50-75 mms possible. Rain should taper to showers Monday afternoon ending on Tuesday. Showers again on Friday.

Thunderstorms.. Storms expected to develop this afternoon and continue through Monday.

Wind..Diminishing southwest winds today shifting to northwest this evening as the front crosses. Light northerly winds tomorrow increasing to brisk/strong northerly  on Tuesday morning diminishing then diminishing in the afternoon. Light west winds expected on Wednesday shifting to southwesterly on Thursday and the ridge line crosses. Southwest winds on Friday shifting back to the northwest late Friday as the cold front passes which should then continue into the weekend.

Temperatures.. Warm and muggy today becoming cooler for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Slight warm-up for Thursday and Friday then cooler again for the weekend.

Tropical storms. Tropical storm Leslie is expected to pass eat of the Maritimes on Tuesday passing very near the southeast tip of Newfoundland Tuesday night.

Forecast..

Today, Tonight and Monday.. Showers becoming periods of rain at times heavy today with risk of thundershowers giving Rainfall amounts of 50-75 mms. The higher amounts across central and eastern areas. Rain tapering to showers Monday afternoon. Light southwest winds will shift to northwest later this evening. Highs today near 22, lows tonight near 16 then holding steady near 16 on Monday.

Tuesday.. Cloudy with showers ending, strong north winds in the morning diminishing in the afternoon with highs near 17.

Wednesday.. Sunny, light west winds, highs 19

Thursday.. Sunny, light southwest winds, highs 21

Friday.. Sunny, becoming cloudy late in the day with possible showers, light southwest winds shifting to northwest late in the day with highs near 22
