Cloudy skies expected on the weekend across PEI

Friday 6:50PM  A north-south ridge of high pressure is located across eastern NB this afternoon and will slowly drift to the northeast over the weekend. The remnants of Hurricane Sandy will be  effect the region on Tuesday and Wednesday with rain and strong east winds.

Hurricane Sandy.. Sandy is located north of the Bahamas this afternoon with max sustained winds of 120 KMH making it a cat 1 storm. Sandy is moving north at 11 KMH  and expected to weaken to a tropical storm as dry air intrusion and upper level shear are tearing it apart. Sandy is espected to interact with an approaching trough of low pressure from the west and cause the storm to transition to an extra-tropical storm. This will cause the storm to re-intensify and make the wind field expand as it turns to the west. The big question is where and when will the storm turn toward the east coast. The models continue to show discrepancies with land fall anywhere for Virginia to Cape cod. The large wind field of very strong winds will impact a large area of the east coast including the Canadian Maritimes provinces. Very heavy rain will also accompany this system causing flooding. Storm surge is also of great concern as the storm will be making landfall during the monthly high tides associated with the full moon. All interests along the east coast need to pay attention to forecasts and warnings. The Canadian Hurricane center has been issuing statements regarding this storm with the expected landfall just south of NYC on Tuesday morning.

Precipitation.. Chance of showers beginning late Saturday evening  and continuing through Sunday and Monday. Rain at times heavy expected on Tuesday and Wednesday as Sandy tracks by.

Wind.. Light northerly winds tonight turning northeast on Saturday and Sunday then brisk easterly on Monday. Winds will increase to strong easterly on Tuesday. Diminishing southeast winds on Wednesday shifting to southerly on Thursday and Friday.
