Friday 8:20am.. A stationary/slow moving area of high pressure is located over western NB this morning and will drift off to the northeast on Sunday. Hurricane Sandy will be tracking northward off the east coast of the US. A trough of low pressure will approach the east coast on Monday and is expected to pull the storm inland somewhere south of NYC. When this happens, the wind field will expand with strong winds and heavy rains expected right up into the Maritimes on Tuesday. Long range models continue to show lingering effects for the remnants of Sandy right through until Friday.
Hurricane Sandy.. Sandy was located over the northern Bahamas this morning with max sustained winds of 130 KMH and moving northwest at 20 KMH. The official track is somewhat complicated with a couple of turns expected before it moves inland. There still is uncertainty on where the final turn will take place which will eventually bring it onshore. The wind field will be expanding as it undergoes transition into a hybrid or extra-tropical storm and these winds will be felt right up the coast and into the Maritimes on Tuesday. Lots of uncertainties exist with this storm and interests up and down the east coast need to monitor the progress of the dangerous system.
Precipitation... Showers should begin overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning and continue through until Friday. Too early to go into amounts as it will be dependent on track of Sandy and how quickly it weakens.
Wind.. Light north winds today should become northeasterly later tomorrow then turn easterly on Monday. Winds will increase to brisk/strong easterly on Tuesday as Sandy turns inland somewhere along the east coast. Winds will become southeasterly then southerly later in the week as the storm center tracks to the west of the Maritimes.
Temperatures.. Will be on a warming trend peaking Wednesday/Thursday with highs in the mid/high teens then beginning to cool down on Friday.
