Sandy dominates the weather across PEI through the weekend

Monday 8:15am.. Hurricane Sandy is located  615 KM SSE of New York City early this morning with max sustained winds of 140 KMH. Sandy is now moving northward at 24 KMH and a turn toward the NW then WNW is expected today bringing the storm onshore along the southern NJ coast near midnight tonight. Sandy will begin to interact with a strong trough of low pressure along the east coast which may strengthen the storm slightly before landfall tonight. The storm will begin to transition into a very strong Extra-tropical system as it looses it warm core or tropical characteristics causing it’s wind field to expand away from the center. Sandy will weaken after landfall as it heads inland toward the eastern Great Lakes on Thursday but will take a while to spin down. Long range models take the remnant low pressure system into the Maritimes on Saturday. High pressure will begin to push into the region early next week bringing an end top a week of cloudy wet weather.

Precipitation.. Periods of drizzle today, tonight, and tomorrow then showers associated with Sandy should begin late Tuesday night and continue into Thursday as Sandy moves inland then rain expected to begin Friday evening and continue through Saturday as the remnants of Sandy pass across the Maritimes. Too early for rainfall amounts at this times but could be significant. Flurries are possible on Monday as colder air filters in over the region.

Wind..Increasing east winds today shifting to SE on Tuesday and Wednesday then diminishing to light on Thursday. Light south winds will shift to westerly on Saturday as Sandy pass north of PEI then brisk northerly on Monday.
