Thursday 5:00pm A broad area of low pressure located over eastern Canada this afternoon will slowly drift off to the northeast by the weekend. Several smaller areas of low pressure have developed embedded in this larger system. One of these smaller low pressure systems has developed south of NS today and will track across PEI tonight. Rain has spread across the island as this low begins to track through. This whole area will eventually move off to the northeast by the end of the week as cooler high pressure builds in over the region resulting in a couple days of dry but cold weather for the beginning of next week. A trough of low pressure will approach the east coast by mid week with a low pressure system expected to develop. This will intensify into a potential noreaster for Wednesday night into Thursday. There will be enough cold air in place for snow on the western fringe of this system. Right now models are taking the system into Maine on Thursday keeping the Maritimes on the warm side but any eastward shift in track will make things interesting for western NB. In any event looks like a lot of rain and wind for PEI mid week.
Precipitation.. Rain has already begun across the island as a low pressure system lifts across with amounts in the 5-10 mm range. Friday for the most part looks dry with showers developing again on Saturday as a cold front swings through. Chance of showers in the cold unstable air on Sunday and Monday with even a possibility of flurries or ice pellets. Rain associated with the mid week noreaster develops on Wednesday night and continues through Thursday. Too early for details but amounts could be significant.
Wind.. Light and variable winds tonight becoming southwesterly tomorrow as the low tracks across the Island. Winds will shift to brisk Northeasterly on Saturday as the cold front crosses then basically westerly for Sunday and Monday. This wind direction should keep most of the showers off shore. Winds will shift to easterly on Wednesday increasing to strong late in the day and into Thursday.
Temperatures.. Will be cooling off over the next few days to normal values by Sunday then below normal for Monday,Tuesday and early Wednesday then warming up by Wednesday evening.
