Thursday May 4th 8:40am.. An area of high pressure centered over New England will drift eastward passing south of NS overnight tonight. A frontal system will then approach the Maritimes from the SW on Friday. This frontal system will tap deep tropical Atlantic moisture leading to a significant rainfall event for parts of the region. The associated low will become “cut-off” from the main upper flow thus it meanders up along the St Lawrence River valley through Tuesday. In fact the models have the low lingering over eastern Canada through most of ext week. So an extended period wet pattern of weather ahead for the Maritimes.
Precipitation.. Rain should spread across PEI near midnight tomorrow night and taper to showers Saturday afternoon. Showers then continue through Monday. This rain could be significant and models right now are hinting at very heavy amounts possible along either side of the Bay of Fundy (75mms). This area could shift east or west depending how the system sets-up. Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for both NS and NB regarding this potential. Could be a dry period on Tuesday then more showers Wednesday and Thursday.
Temperatures..Normal today, above normal tomorrow through Tuesday. It will also get quite muggy on the weekend as well with the tropical air. Cool for Wednesday through Friday.
Wind.. Light NW winds today will drop off to calm this evening then become SW tonight. Light SW winds continue tomorrow increasing to brisk SE for the weekend.
Hazards.. Potential for heavy rains beginning late Friday night. If you are prone to water in your basement then have your sump pump ready.
Watches/warnings.. None for PEI at this time but special weather statements are in effect just across the Strait in NS and NB for possible significant rainfall threat. I would consider PEI to be under this as well.
