High impact wind event expected for PEI tomorrow afternoon

Sunday, October 29th 8:30am… An area of high pressure drifted across the Maritimes late yesterday and is now centered just east of NS. Clear skies and light winds accompanied this feature. Hold on to your hats as things are gonna get interesting… A low pressure system has developed in North Carolina and will intensify as it tracks northward towards southern Quebec. Tropical Storm Philippe has also developed and has now located over the Florida Keys.. This tropical storm will also race northward become absorbed by the system in NC  resulting in a large and powerful fall storm. The storm itself should be located near Montreal tomorrow morning but a cold front extending southeastward from this strong storm will sweep across the Maritimes Monday evening. Rain and very strong damaging winds expected from this system across New England and eastern Canada tomorrow. These very strong south winds will occur at high tide along the south shore PEI causing potential high water levels along with pounding waves and surf. The front sweeps across the island early tomorrow evening  bringing an end to the rain followed by slowly diminishing winds. An area of high pressure then begins to build in from the west cresting over the region late Wednesday into early Thursday. Sunshine and cooler temps. Another frontal system approaches and crosses the island on Friday with clouds and rain. The coldest air of the season is then set to invade the Maritimes on the weekend with the approach of another area of high pressure but clouds and flurries possible as the cold air interacts with the still relatively warm waters of the Strain/Gulf.

Precipitation.. Rain should spread across the island near noon tomorrow ending near midnight with the cold frontal passage. Rainfall amounts in the 10-15 mm range but difficult to get a handle on due to the tropical moisture that will be involved. Could be locally higher in heavy downpours. Basically dry Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. Rain develops again on Friday. Saturday and Sunday should be dry but can’t rule out a shower or flurrie.

Temperatures.. Above normal today, tomorrow and Tuesday. Cool down for Wednesday with temps slightly below normal. Normal on Thursday, above normal on Friday followed by a cold weekend.

Wind..  Light south winds today but will begin to increase tonight becoming brisk SE by dawn tomorrow. Very strong south winds peaking late tomorrow afternoon with possible tree damage and power outages. Strongest winds should occur along the south facing coasts and higher terrain. High surf along the south coast at high tide which occurs early tomorrow evening. Expect bridge restrictions expected on the Confederation Bridge. Suggest that you secure or store outdoor items today.

Rain ends this morning across PEI..

Friday, October 27th 6:15am  A stalled frontal band oriented north-south through Maine yesterday brought significant amounts of rain to western NB. A low pressure system then rippled northward along this front enhancing rainfall along its track. Rainfall amounts in the St Stephen area were recorded near 170 mms. The low is now located near Rivière-du-Loup and continues northward, That stalled front than began to move and is in the process of sweep across PEI now which will bring an end to any rain. Skies will begin to clear this afternoon as the front pulls away and high pressure builds in. This feature will crest over the island late Saturday evening then shift east. Clouds will then begin to spread across the island on Sunday as the next weather system approaches.  This next weather system is in fact an intensifying low pressure which will develop off the US mid Atlantic coast and move northward across New England Monday morning then into Quebec. This system will bring a wind event to the island on Monday peaking near noon with southerly gusts to 90 KMH possible along with some rain. Halloween.. Looking great.. Few clouds, light-brisk SW winds and early evening temps near 11.

This system is responsible for significant amounts of rain in western NB where in excess of 100 mm is possible. A Low pressure system has developed along this boundary near NYC and will ripple northward passing overnight tonight. This should allow the front to finally move east passing across PEI tomorrow morning. Rain will develop through the day today then end tomorrow morning with the passage of the front. The warm weather continues for PEI…

Wednesday, October 25th 7:50am... A slow moving frontal trough oriented north-south is currently located through central New England. This system will move into NB tonight then stall and weaken as it cross PEI during the day on Friday. Significant amounts of rain are falling from this system due to the fact that it is tapping tropical moisture and it’s forward speed is so slow. The front will finally cross the island early Friday morning with the rain ending by noon. Clearing skies take place Friday afternoon as a ridge of high pressure begins to build in from the west. A great weekend ahead as This feature will crest over the island Saturday night giving sunshine and light winds.  High Clouds will begin to spread across the island during the day on Sunday as the next trough of low pressure approaches from the Great Lakes with rain developing Monday morning/afternoon. High pressure builds in for Tuesday.

An elongated trough of low pressure oriented north-south will slowly approach the Maritimes on Wednesday and slowly cross the island during the day on Thursday. This system will tap tropical moisture from the south and because it’s moving so slowly, there is potential for significant amounts of rain for parts of the region. Increasing southerly winds will allow temps to climb well above normal for this time of year. Skies should begin to clear about noon on Friday as the trough finally pushes through and high pressure builds in from the west. This feature should bring sunshine and light winds to the island for the weekend. Clouds will begin to spread across the region later Sunday as the next weather system approaches with some showers late Monday.

Precipitation.. Dry conditions expected for a couple more days. Rain should begin to spread across western PEI early Thursday and slowly spread across the island through the day ending from west to east overnight Thursday into Friday morning. A frontal boundary oriented north-south currently stretches from the Gulf of Mexico to Hudson’s Bay. A strong low pressure system will develop in the Central US and move northward along this frontal boundary late tomorrow night. This will then force the front to move eastward with some showers beginning overnight Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. This rainfall will be heavy at times with it’s tropical origin but still a bit early to go into details on where the heaviest bans will be and how much will fall.
