Cold today, tonight and tomorrow across PEI.

Wednesday, January 2nd 7:00am… A low pressure system moved eastward yesterday passing across NB/NS and is now located over southeastern Newfoundland. Cold arctic air has invaded the island in the wake of this system on brisk-strong NW winds. High pressure centered just south of Hudson’s Bay will also drift eastward and is expected to crest over the island overnight tonight. Clear skis and calm winds will most likely bring the coldest temperatures of the season tonight as this feature moves through. A couple of things to watch beginning on Thursday. First a low pressure system will develop off the US mid Atlantic coast and track NE. This system is expected to stay south with the majority of the snow remaining offshore south of NS. Another weather disturbance will cross the region on Friday giving about 5 cms of snow. High pressure will briefly build in for Saturday with some sunshine. A noreaster is expected to develop off the US mid Atlantic coast and track NE towards the region on Sunday. The latest models are also trending south with this system which is holds true will keep the bulk of any snow south of NS.

Precipitation.. Few flurries ending near noon. Light snow of flurries on Thursday associated with the system passing well south of  NS. Another system moves through on Friday with up to 5 cms snow possible. Dry on Saturday then snow again on Sunday.

Temperatures… Very cold today, tonight and tomorrow. Warm-up develops on Friday and continues through next week with temps near normal.

Wind.. Diminishing NW winds today dropping off to calm tonight. Light SE winds develop tomorrow and Friday. Light NW winds on Saturday.

Hazards.. Brisk NW winds and cold temps will result in very low wind chills this morning.

Watches/warnings… Wind warning remains in effect this morning across PEI but anticipate that to be lifted soon as winds diminish.
