Thursday, June 20th 6:00am… Summer officially begins today with the solstice arriving at 5:50pm. The heat and humidity also continues today across PEI but relief is on it’s way with the approach of a cold front from the NW. Clouds are expected to build this afternoon accompanied by showers and thundershowers as that front nears. Frontal passage is expected to occur later this afternoon and accompanied by a wind shift to the NW which will usher in cooler air and lower humidity. Skies should clear overnight tonight leading to a mainly sunny day tomorrow. That front begins to shift back to the north as a warm front on the weekend resulting in high cloudiness or filtered sunshine for Saturday and rain Sunday afternoon. Monday remains cloudy and unsettled inside the warm sector with chance of showers and thundershowers. The accompanying cold front then sweeps across PEI Monday night with any rain ending before dawn Tuesday followed by clearing skies by noon Tuesday. Sunshine in Wednesday followed by more cloud and showers on Thursday as low pressure moves across the Maritimes.
Precipitation… Showers and thundershowers develop this afternoon ending near midnight tonight. Some of these showers could be locally heavy. Rain begins again Sunday mid afternoon tapering to showers Sunday night. Chance of showers then continue until dawn Tuesday morning. Rain Thursday.
Temperatures… Hot and humid today. The cool down begins this evening in the wake of the cold frontal passage. Normal conditions return tomorrow.
Wind… Light-brisk SW-W winds today shifting to light NW this evening which then continue tomorrow, Winds shift back to the SW on Saturday. SW winds increase to brisk-strong Sunday night into Monday morning.
Hazards… Heat and humidity today. Wet driving conditions in any rain this afternoon and evening. Could be locally heavy. Watch for lightning today as well.
Watches/Warnings… Heat warning remains in effect for today across PEI but anticipate that this will be dropped or cancelled this evening.
