Few showers possible today across PEI.

Thursday, May 23rd 6:15am… A stationary front is draped east-west across the Maritimes this morning and in the focus of a few showers and thundershowers across NB. These showers are moving east along the surface front and may cross PEI over the next couple hours as they traverse the island. An occluded front will then approach from the west and is expected to move across PEI during the evening hours today with another round of showers and possible thundershowers. Unsettled weather continue tomorrow as an area of low pressure moves east out of Quebec and moves across the central Gulf. The accompanying cold front is then expected to sweep across the island late tomorrow afternoon. The weekend is looking okay with a mix of sun and cloud but it will be on the cooler side although a weak upper level system crossing the region on Sunday may bring some cloudy periods and slight chance of a shower. We are watching a large area of low pressure spinning in the Great Lakes for the beginning of next week. This system will start to spread some cloud across the island Monday night with rain beginning Tuesday afternoon as the accompanying frontal systems move through. Sunshine expected on Thursday then more cloud and showers on Friday as another area of low pressure approaches.

Precipitation… Few showers and thundershowers possible now through noon tomorrow. A few showers possible on Sunday as that weak upper air disturbance moves through. Rain begins near noon Tuesday ending before dawn Wednesday. This could be a good dumping of rain which is needed for the fire index. More rain possible on Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures… Above normal next couple days followed by a cool weekend. Temps begin to moderate again on Monday.

Wind… Light SE winds today veering to SW tomorrow then NW late tomorrow behind the cold front. Light northerlies winds on the weekend which will help keep the temps on the cool side. Winds then turn easterly on Monday ahead of the Great Lakes low pressure system. Brisk-strong SE winds expected on Tuesday as the frontal system approaches.

Hazards… Wet driving conditions in showers beginning today. Risk of lightning. Strong SE winds on Tuesday for those on the water.

Watches/Warnings… None for PEI at this time.
